Gymnastics High Performance Centre,
in Odisha (India)
Main objective of video-based Motion Analysis in Gymnastics
The installation was designed to give gymnasts and coaches an effective tool to precisely analyse and optimise movement sequences and techniques through video. It was essential to equip each gymnastics apparatus (for both men’s and women’s disciplines) with permanently installed cameras. The delayed playback feature allows the athletes to review their exercises or specific elements on a large screen immediately after they have been performed. This instant feedback enables precise movement analysis, helps identify mistakes and promotes targeted technique improvement. At the same time, the system strengthens the gymnasts’ self-awareness and assists coaches in delivering clearer explanations and corrections.
Purpose and added value of Motion Analysis in Gymnastics
Motion analysis is central to achieving peak athletic performance at the Odisha performance centre, enhancing both the effectiveness and sustainability of gymnastics training. Using high-speed cameras, TEMPLO® Motion Analysis Software, and large TV screens, gymnastics movements can be thoroughly captured and analysed frame by frame. A total of nine strategically placed cameras provide comprehensive coverage of each apparatus (including uneven bars, balance beam, floor, vault, pommel horse, rings, high bar, and parallel bars) capturing every movement from optimal angles for detailed analysis.
One particularly useful feature of the TEMPLO® software is the delayed live view, allowing coaches to assess athletes’ execution, posture, and technique immediately after an element or exercise is completed. This provides athletes with valuable feedback that supports targeted improvements.
The combination of video recording and instant feedback speeds up the learning process and significantly increases training quality. Additionally, gymnasts can benefit from self-analysis, gaining valuable insights into their exercises and elements even when a coach isn’t present.
Recorded sequences can be saved retrospectively (after the exercise has been performed) by pressing the buzzer. This allows training progress to be made measurable and enables continuous refinement of the athletes’ techniques. Additionally, these recordings can be compared over time or between different gymnasts (e.g. comparing Athlete A’s exercise with Athlete B’s or Athlete A’s exercise at Time X with their own exercise at Time Y). The software features like angle measurement, adding graphic elements, or zooming is conducted via a (wireless) bluetooth keyboard with touchpad.
PRODUCTS
An innovative technical solution has been developed for the motion analysis in gymnastics that is specially tailored to the needs of gymnasts and coaches. A total of nine high-speed cameras were installed in the gymnasium, all of which are connected to the same PC. The individual system for each gymnastic apparatus is controlled by a Mini PC mounted on the TV screen. The buzzer acts as a control element and enables the analysis recording to be started, stopped and saved. All systems can be operated simultaneously, either with a buzzer or via a bluetooth keyboard with touchpad.
