VOLLEY VLAANDERN
University Sports Centre of the KU Leuven
Objective of the project
The CONTEMPLAS motion analysis system is designed to enable professional and flexible analysis of the technical and tactical elements of the game. Cameras from different perspectives were installed on two fields (2x 5-camera systems) in the new 4-court sports hall for this purpose. The video analyses are used both in training and in matches. The aim is to improve the performance of the players and the team tactics of the men’s and women’s national volleyball teams in the long term and to achieve success through data-based, visual analyses in training and competitions.
What is the purpose of the analysis system?
Technique Improvement:
Through the detailed analysis of individual players movements, sources of errors are to be identified, and precise suggestions for improvement are developed. This primarily concerns hitting techniques, serves, receptions, setting and blocking techniques.
Tactical Optimisation:
Video analysis helps evaluate and specifically improve team tactical processes such as positioning, defensive strategies, movement patterns, and offensive actions.
Analysing Kinematic Parameters:
The aim is to capture and optimise the biomechanical properties of offensive and defensive techniques. Specific parameters such as angles, speeds, and contact times between the body and the ball are analysed. These data are intended to be used to precisely assess players’ performance and develop targeted recommendations for improvement.
Efficiency Improvement in Training:
Coaches and players can use video sequences to specifically identify progress and weak points, which enables training to be organised more effectively and exercises to be adapted individually. Post-training discussions can also be conducted more efficiently with the aid of video recordings.
Competition Preparation:
By analysing match situations during competition, opponents can be better understood and strategies can be adjusted accordingly to ensure optimal preparation for future games.
Real-time Feedback:
The analysis provides immediate feedback to coaches and players by being used on several fields simultaneously, enabling quick tactical or technical adjustments.
Which additional value has the analysis system created for the coaches of the national team?
- Comprehensive and precise analysis: Synchronised recordings from different perspectives enable a detailed view of game situations. Numerous physical and technical performance parameters can be precisely measured and recorded.
- 3D measurements: Precise data on jump height, pass length and serve speed improve the monitoring of athletic performance.
- Direct feedback: Immediate feedback in technical training accelerates the learning process.
- Flexible analysis: Complex movement and game sequences can be analysed immediately or afterwards in order to draw precise tactical and technical conclusions.
- Independent player review: Time-delayed playback and slow motion promote independent learning and understanding of one’s own performance
- Objectivity: Standardised recordings provide an objective basis for performance comparisons and training assessments. Quantitative evaluation makes it possible to measure and compare serve, attack and defence techniques.
- Integration with live streaming to Datavolley: The system is able to transmit live data to Datavolley to ensure seamless transmission and analysis during the game.
What was the challenge of this project?
- Camera positioning: In order to optimise coverage of all areas of the field, the cameras were positioned precisely to meet the requirements of the analysis.
- Camera protection: Special housings protect the cameras from impact damage caused by basketballs and volleyballs.
- Bridging large distances: The cable lengths between the cameras and the server had to be reliably laid over long distances to ensure stable data transmission.
- Optimised resolution and frequency: The cameras were adapted to the IT infrastructure to ensure high image quality and frame rate.
- Shared network lines: Due to limited bandwidth, some cameras share a line, which is why special cameras were used to still ensure smooth transmission.
USED PRODUCTS
The analysis system consists of two server-based 5-camera systems including 3 PTZ cameras (pan-tilt-zoom) and two permanently installed ceiling cameras. These cameras record in full HD at 100 frames per second, enabling precise, high-resolution analysis of every game and training sequence. In addition, the system can provide time-delayed recordings of all cameras, which can be conveniently controlled via a tablet. This allows coaches to view specific camera angles in delayed playback and analyse them in detail. The recorded data is stored centrally on a high-performance server, which enables fast processing and long-term storage. A 3D calibration is used for detailed movement analysis, which, together with extended measurement options, ensures precise recording of parameters such as jump height, movement sequences and other kinematic data.
