Mobile Tablet solution in use for research & teaching

Technical University of Munich

Department of Sport and Health Sciences

Objective of the project

The Technical University of Munich needed a simple and mobile system for visual feedback that can be used universally. Video feedback should be provided in real time or with a time delay in order to optimally analyze and improve movement sequences.

Purpose and area of application of mobile motion analysis

The mobile tablet solution includes an immediate feedback option for different movement sequences, which is made possible by the recording and subsequent playback of video recordings at different time intervals (e.g. 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds). This time-delayed playback allows users to analyse their movements in detail, which supports precise and targeted error detection and correction. Integrating video-based movement analysis into various courses opens up new possibilities in teaching and research.

On the one hand, it enables students to improve their motor skills and, on the other, data-based analyses can be carried out for research purposes. Teachers and researchers can evaluate movement sequences in real time, customise learning processes and collect and evaluate scientific findings on movement sequences.

Video analysis can be used for a wide range of sports

Which additional value has the system created at the TU Munich?

  • Visualisation of the movement regardless of location and type of movement
  • Availability of video recordings directly after movement execution
  • Self-analysis and external analysis through retrospective recordings and time-delayed playback loop of different time periods
  • Technical-tactical parameters such as: Running routes, playing positions, execution of movements
  • Collection of video clips for subsequent discussion

What was the challenge of this project?

Portability and flexibility

The system had to be extremely light and compact so that it could be easily transported and set up at different locations. At the same time, it had to be robust enough to function stably and reliably in a wide variety of environments – from sports halls and laboratories to outdoor areas. The question arose as to how to design the necessary technical equipment in such a way that it would remain both functional and transportable without compromising on performance.

User-friendliness of the software

Another challenge was to develop the software in such a way that different user groups – from laypeople to experts – could carry out movement analyses intuitively and easily. The user interface had to be designed in such a way that complex measurements and movement analyses were possible without overwhelming users with technical details. At the same time, the software had to be flexible enough to cover a wide range of applications, from simple training analyses to scientific research projects.

Case

The system consists of a mobile setup that is flexible and easy to transport. It includes a tablet holder that holds the tablet securely in place and enables convenient operation. A tripod is also integrated, to which a high-speed camera is attached. The recording can be started either via the tablet or alternatively by using a buzzer. This also ensures quick and easy operation during training or exercises. It provides seamless feedback on the recorded movements without interrupting the flow of the exercise.
